• Women’s Business Enterprise National Council (WBENC)
Birkenstock Lighting Design is a certified woman owned economically disadvantaged small business. BLD is incorporated, registered with Dunn & Bradstreet, and carries professional insurance levels to meet large scale commercial design project requirements.
Birkenstock Lighting Design is a leader in use of technology to provide creative lighting designs. Some of our tools in technology include:
AutoCAD
Basic, yet powerful, Birkenstock Lighting Design utilizes AutoCAD for documentation and coordination.
Revit
Utilizing BIM technologies Birkenstock Lighting Design streamlines the design process and helps our architectural clients with clash detection by implementing lighting equipment in real time right along with them.
Elum Tools
• Allows us to provide realistic photographic renderings utilizing the materials and finishes provided by our design clients within their REVIT model.
• This is especially beneficial for presentations to our client’s clients (the owners and end users) to completely visualize the end product from the lighting approach.
Sketch Up
This 3D modeling program has been a vital tool to quickly explore concepts and visualize designs. It also allows us to communicate our ideas to the architects and interior designers we work with easily, by modifying their models.
Photoshop
During Design Development Photoshop allows us to manipulate the renderings, provided by our clients, to show how we will incorporate our lighting within their design. It is a great tool to show the client how the lighting will bring their space to life!
AGi32
This tool provides us with a method of creating accurate lighting calculations for any interior, exterior, or roadway application. As we perform calculations throughout the design process, this tools helps us ensure we are meeting all foot candle requirements, per IESNA standards. AGi32 also creates renderings in gray-scale or pseudo color to help us show clients how the light will effect the space.
Visual Lighting Calculation
During the design phases of our projects, we continually run in-house photometry lighting calculations to ensure proper foot-candle levels per the IESNA standards are met. Visual also allows us to calculate daylight contribution as well as produce 3D renderings with color representative of lighting levels throughout the space.
Energy Calculation
In our “back or house” design phases, we run in-house energy calculations to ensure code compliance, as well comparative calculations towards the targeted LEED or other energy goals. We work with several programs (due to varying state codes), and typically hand this electronic documentation to the electrical engineering consultant, eliminating the redundancy of work efforts.

This March, members of the BLD team went to Frankfurt, Germany to attend the largest international lighting show, Light + Building. Held every two years, lighting manufactures from all over the world come to show off their newest products, designs, and technologies. While at the show, the BLD team took tons of photos and videos to capture the newest trends in lighting design! Some trends include new form factors for standard fixtures, multitopic design, new finishes, organic LED’s, wave guide technology, beam shaping technology, and so much more!
